The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon

Set in Barcelona, a young boy's father takes him, after his mother's death, to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books where he can pick an abandoned book to take for his own. As he falls in love with the book, he also falls deep into the dark side of Barcelona and into a real life story of tragic love, madness and revenge - and where a mysterious figure will do anything to make sure that book is destroyed.

It's so good I've read it three times, and then I even bought it so I could read it again and pester people with it.
